Peterskirche is one of Vienna's most ornate Baroque churches, its green copper dome and twin towers rising dramatically above the narrow streets of the Innere Stadt. Shooting from Graben pedestrian street gives you a compressed perspective with the facade framed tightly between buildings, especially effective with a short telephoto in the 50 to 85mm range. Step closer to the entrance for detailed shots of the sculptural facade, or move to the side streets for a three-quarter angle that shows the dome's full mass. Overcast days work well here by eliminating harsh shadows on the relief work, though morning light catches the warm stone facade nicely before crowds gather. Inside, the gilded interior rewards a wide-angle lens and a steady hand in low light. The church sits just off the Graben, making it an easy addition to any shoot in the first district.
