Pīpīwai Trail
The Pīpīwai Trail winds four miles through one of Maui's most visually dramatic landscapes, taking you past banyan trees draped in aerial roots, a dense bamboo forest that creates natural tunnel compositions, and ultimately to the towering 400-foot Waimoku Falls. The bamboo section is particularly striking, where a tight 50mm or wide-angle lens captures the towering stalks converging overhead into a cathedral-like canopy. Shoot Makahiku Falls from the overlook platform early in the morning before crowds arrive, and use the stream crossings as foreground interest with a wide lens. Overcast days are ideal here since the dense canopy already limits direct light, and soft diffused conditions reduce harsh shadows on the waterfalls. Wear waterproof shoes, as the trail gets muddy and involves stream crossings; the full out-and-back takes three to four hours. (Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
