Waimoku Falls is a dramatic 400-foot waterfall tucked deep in the Kipahulu Valley, accessible via the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park. The hike to reach it takes you through dense bamboo forest, which itself offers compelling shots, so bring your camera ready before you even arrive at the falls. Once there, a wide-angle lens works well to capture the full height of the cascade against the surrounding cliffs and lush vegetation. Position yourself back from the base to get the entire drop in frame, or move closer to emphasize the power and texture of the water. Overcast days are ideal since the narrow valley limits direct sunlight and soft light reduces harsh contrast on the white water and dark rock face. The trail is a four-mile round trip with some uneven terrain, so wear sturdy shoes and expect the area near the falls to be wet and slippery. (Kipahulu, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
