Plover Cove Reservoir is a vast man-made lake in the northeastern New Territories, where a sweeping 2km dam separates the calm freshwater reservoir from Tolo Harbour, creating a striking contrast of still, mirror-like water backed by layered green hills. Walk out along the dam for unobstructed panoramic views in both directions, using the curved seawall as a natural leading line into your frame. Early morning is ideal when mist often settles over the water and the hills glow with soft light; overcast days also work well by eliminating harsh shadows and enhancing the reflections. A wide-angle lens suits the expansive landscape, though a telephoto lets you compress the distant ridgelines beautifully. The dam is accessible from Tai Mei Tuk village, a short taxi or bus ride from Tai Po Market MTR station. If your legs are up for it, sections of the 18km reservoir trail reward you with elevated viewpoints looking down across the full breadth of the water. (Plover Cove Country Park, Hong Kong)
