Rideau Falls is where the Rideau River splits into twin cascades before dropping into the Ottawa River, giving you two distinct waterfalls to work with in a single frame. The wide, foamy falls contrast nicely against the dark river water, and you can frame them with the Ottawa skyline or the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge in the background for added depth. Shooting from the park on the eastern bank puts you at a good eye level with the falls, while getting lower to the ground emphasizes the rush of water and foreground texture. Overcast days are ideal for waterfalls here since the soft, diffused light reduces harsh shadows and brings out the detail in the cascading water. A wide-angle lens works well to capture both falls together, and a longer exposure smooths out the water nicely. The park is easy to walk through and free to access year-round.
