Roche Abbey is a 12th-century Cistercian monastery tucked into a small wooded valley in South Yorkshire, where dramatic limestone ruins rise against a backdrop of trees and open grassland. The two standing gateway towers are the most striking elements, and framing them symmetrically from the path leading in gives you a strong architectural shot with natural depth. The surrounding earthworks, ponds, and manicured grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown, so there is real variety here beyond just the stonework. Overcast days work well by keeping harsh shadows off the pale limestone, but golden hour light in the late afternoon catches the texture of the carved details beautifully. A wide-angle lens lets you include the valley setting, while a longer focal length isolates the decorative Gothic arches. English Heritage manages the site, so check opening times before visiting; early morning access lets you shoot without crowds. (Maltby, South Yorkshire, England)
