Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society
This striking mid-century religious building in North Hills earns its nickname "The Onion" from its bulbous, dome-like roof that rises dramatically above the surrounding suburban streetscape, making it an instantly recognizable architectural subject. Shoot from across the street to capture the full silhouette of the structure against the sky, or move in closer to emphasize the unusual curved roofline and textured exterior details. A wide to standard focal length, something in the 24-50mm range, works well for showing the building in context with its surroundings, while a longer lens lets you isolate the dome. Overcast days are ideal since harsh midday sun in the San Fernando Valley can blow out the lighter exterior surfaces; golden hour light adds warmth and dimension to the curves. Street parking is available along Plummer Street, and you can shoot comfortably from the public sidewalk. (North Hills, Los Angeles, California, United States)
