About Skallens fyr (Skallens Lighthouse)
Skallens fyr is a white lighthouse standing all alone on the bare granite tip of Marstrandsön Island. The rocky point is surrounded by views looking out over the bay on almost all sides, letting the white tower stand out against its more rugged surroundings. Out across the fjord to the west the Pater Noster lighthouse sits on its own rocky outcrop and on a clear day a telephoto lens will let you add it into the background. There is lots of space to experiment with finding just the right shooting angle. You can easy set up low on the rocks and let the tower fill your frame with an endless sky behind it. Or back up for a much wider view and let the tower's peaceful surroundings give your composition an entirely different vibe. The white crisp paint of the tower tends to blow out under a high sun, so it might be easier to expose for the tower and let the granite keep its detail. Evening and into sunset is the ideal time to be out here. This is when the light will be coming in low off the water and warming the tower, plus the sky will be filled with rich tones. Marstrandsön Island is car free, but is easily accessible with a short passenger ferry across the channel from the mainland. The trail around the island brings you to the lighthouse and is filled with photogenic views worth pausing to capture along the way. (Marstrand, Västra Götaland, Sweden)
