About Skinari Lighthouse
Skinari Lighthouse stands all alone on a clifftop at the northern tip of Zakynthos. This 1890s lighthouse is quite unique with its round tower and a low keeper's house that made from local stones of all different shapes and sizes. The cliffs below are white limestone, cut into sea arches and caves, with bright blue water at their base. Kefalonia Island fills the horizon across the strait. From the path as you walk towards the lighthouse you can pause with a medium telephoto lens to stack the tower as it pops over the low tree line against the open sea with the neighbouring island behind it. If you come later in the day the low light warms the stone and the sea turns a deeper blue. Ideally aim to stay for sunset over the open water to the west. A paved road leads out from Korithi along the headland. The lighthouse is fenced off, so you will only be able shoot it from outside the gate. There are lots of photogenic views from the paths winding around the cape. Boat trips to the Blue Caves pass by the cape so you can add the view from the water. (Volimes, Ionian Islands, Greece)
