Skyline Arch
Skyline Arch sits along the Devils Garden trail in Arches National Park, a dramatically enlarged sandstone arch that nearly doubled in size after a rockfall in 1940. The arch frames open sky beautifully, and you have a few solid compositions to work with: a straight-on shot from the trail gives you the classic symmetrical view, while moving closer and shooting upward with a wide-angle lens emphasizes the sheer scale of the opening against blue sky or passing clouds. Side-light in the early morning or late afternoon brings out the texture and warm orange tones of the sandstone walls. Midday light flattens the rock and creates harsh contrast, so aim for the golden hours. The arch is a short, easy walk from the Devils Garden trailhead, making it one of the more accessible stops in the park. A 16-35mm or similar wide-angle lens works well here.
