Sri Mariamman Temple
Built in 1827, this is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple and one of the most visually striking structures in Chinatown, dominated by its towering gopuram entrance tower covered in hundreds of hand-sculpted deities painted in vivid reds, yellows, and greens. The gopuram is your main subject, and shooting from directly across South Bridge Road gives you a clean frontal composition that captures its full height against the sky. A wide angle lens works well to take in the entire tower, while a longer focal length lets you isolate individual deity figures in the tiers. Midday light brings out the saturated colors of the sculptures, though an overcast sky reduces harsh shadows and gives more even tones across the detailed carvings. Remove your shoes before entering the temple grounds, where you can also find quieter interior courtyard shots away from street traffic. (Chinatown, Singapore)
