Built between 1908 and 1911, this striking Art Nouveau church sits at the heart of Vienna's vast Central Cemetery, making it one of the most dramatic ecclesiastical subjects in the city. The building's massive copper dome, symmetrical facade, and ornate detailing reward a wide-angle lens for full frontal compositions from the main avenue leading up to the entrance. That central approach also gives you a strong leading line through the cemetery's tree-lined path, especially effective in autumn when the foliage turns golden. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening shadows and letting the architectural detail read clearly, while late afternoon light catches the dome's green patina nicely. The surrounding gravestones and monuments add foreground interest without feeling intrusive. The cemetery is large, so give yourself extra time to explore different vantage points around the building, including the sides and rear. Entry to the cemetery is free. (Vienna, Austria)
