St. James Cemetery
Tucked behind St. James Cathedral in downtown Toronto, this historic cemetery is one of the city's most atmospheric and underrated photo locations, offering Gothic mausoleums, weathered headstones, and mature trees that create a layered, painterly scene. You can work the older sections near the chapel for tightly framed shots of carved stonework and iron fencing, or pull back for wider compositions that contrast the Victorian monuments against glimpses of the surrounding city skyline. Overcast days are ideal here, as soft diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the texture in aged stone; golden hour also works well when low light filters through the tree canopy. A 35mm or 50mm lens suits the intimate scale of the space nicely. The cemetery is open to the public during daylight hours and the grounds are well maintained and easy to walk.
