St. John's Cathedral
St. John's Cathedral is a striking Romanesque Revival church near downtown Los Angeles, with a warm terracotta and brick facade, arched entryways, and a symmetrical front elevation that rewards careful composition. Shooting from across Adams Boulevard gives you the full facade with enough distance to work with a 24-70mm lens and include the towers framing the central entrance. Early morning light hits the front of the building well, bringing out the texture and color of the brick, while overcast days eliminate harsh shadows in the deep archways and help even out the exposure. Move in close to isolate the carved stonework and arched doorways for detail shots, or step back to include the surrounding trees as natural framing. Parking is available nearby and the grounds are generally accessible, making it a relaxed stop for architectural photography in the West Adams neighborhood.
