Stonehurst East is a tiny fishing community tucked away along the rocky shore just past Blue Rocks. Weathered wooden shacks, stacked lobster traps, and a scatter of small islands sit against dark Atlantic water just begging to be photographed. Nearly every cove and wharf works as a composition here, from the painted sheds reflecting in still water to the house perched all alone on its own little island complete with a footbridge. You can easily park at the small lot by the footbridge and explore the shoreline on foot. You can easily experiment with shooting back toward the island house from the rocks or following the road winding through the cove to capture the boats, traps, and weathered exteriors from different angles. A wide to standard zoom (roughly 24-70mm) covers most of it, while a longer lens lets you compress the layered shacks and islands or reach across the water to isolate a single building. Early morning is the ideal time to arrive, when fog often hangs over the coves and the light stays soft and cool. Overcast days can also work beautifully, holding contrast down and keeping the painted wood and water rich. The road in is narrow and the island itself is private property across the footbridge, so make sure to work respectfully from the public shore. Stonehurst East is a quiet, easy place to shoot, that you will want to come to over and over again. (Stonehurst East, Nova Scotia, Canada)
