Battery Point Breakwater Lighthouse
This compact white square lighthouse sits at the end of a stone breakwater guarding the eastern entrance to Lunenburg Harbour, and its clean geometric form against the open Atlantic makes it a satisfying subject. Since the surrounding land is owned by a private fish plant, your best access is from the water, so consider renting a kayak or booking a local boat tour to get close and work different angles. From the water you can compose the lighthouse against the colourful heritage buildings of Lunenburg's UNESCO-listed waterfront in the background, giving you strong foreground interest and a sense of place. Overcast days soften harsh shadows on the white tower and bring out the texture of the stone breakwater, while golden hour light warms the scene nicely. A short to mid telephoto lens works well for compressing the lighthouse against the town behind it. (Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada)
