Studlagil Canyon
Studlagil Canyon is a columnar basalt canyon that was only recently revealed when the river was damned for a hydroelectric plant. Accessing the site off route 1 takes 30-40 minutes on a dirt road that is ok at best in the summer and dangerous in the winter. There are two parking sites one off the main road which will lead you to a viewing platform opposite where this photo was taken and the other site which is across the bridge. The parking across the bridge is accessed on a poorly maintained road so proceed with caution. This site leads you to an out and back trail where you can access the lower sections of the canyon and get right up next to the columns. (Eiriksstadhir, Iceland)
