Litlanesfoss is a dramatic waterfall enclosed by towering hexagonal basalt columns that rise on both sides like a natural cathedral, making it one of Iceland's most geometrically striking compositions. You reach it along the Hengifoss Trail in East Iceland, about 30 to 60 minutes of steady uphill walking from the trailhead near Lake Lagarfljót. The classic shot is from the front, using a wide angle lens to capture both the falling water and the full symmetry of the columnar basalt walls framing it on either side. Getting close to the base emphasizes the scale of the columns and adds foreground interest. Overcast days work beautifully here, as diffused light brings out the texture and color of the dark basalt without harsh shadows. A polarizing filter helps cut glare on the water and saturate the moss-covered rock. Wear waterproof footwear, as the ground near the falls stays wet. (Brekka, Austurland, Iceland)
