Hengifoss
Hengifoss is one of Iceland's most visually striking waterfalls, dropping around 128 meters down a cliff face layered with vivid red clay bands and dark basalt columns, creating a geological backdrop that is as photogenic as the falls themselves. The layered cliff is the real subject here, so position yourself far enough back to include the full face in your frame and let the thin white ribbon of water provide scale and movement. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the canyon, while a telephoto lets you compress and isolate the red and black striations. Shoot on overcast days when diffused light keeps the red tones rich without harsh shadows. On the way up, stop at Litlanesfoss for tight compositions of its symmetrical basalt columns framing the falls. Wear sturdy footwear as the trail is rocky and steep in places.
