Summit View

Summit View - Photo by Aaron Smith1 / 1

Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the eastern seaboard and, for much of the year, the first place in the United States to catch the sunrise, making it one of the most sought-after dawn shooting locations in the country. The open granite summit gives you a wide, unobstructed view across Frenchman Bay, with islands, distant coastline, and open ocean stretching out below you. Shoot toward the east as the light breaks over the water, or turn around to catch warm pink tones washing over the rocky terrain and surrounding hills. A wide angle lens works well for sweeping compositions, but a short telephoto lets you compress the islands in the bay. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise to secure a good position; the crowds can be heavy, especially in peak season. Moving to the right of the main parking area gives you more space and a less cluttered foreground. (Acadia National Park, Maine, United States)
