Anemone Cave is a dramatic sea cave carved into the pink granite cliffs of Acadia National Park, where ocean swells surge into a narrow rocky chasm lined with tidal life and barnacle-covered walls. The cave is most compelling when you position yourself at the entrance and use the dark framing of the rock walls to draw the eye inward toward the churning water and textured stone. A wide-angle lens works well here to capture the full sense of enclosure and scale, while a slower shutter speed will smooth out the incoming waves for a more atmospheric look. Visit at low tide so you can safely access the rocks and see more of the cave interior; high tide brings dramatic wave action but limits your movement. Overcast days reduce harsh shadows inside the cave and bring out the rich colors of the sea life and granite. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the rocks are consistently wet and slippery.
