Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is one of Singapore's most rewarding nature photography destinations, a protected mangrove ecosystem teeming with wildlife and textured landscapes. The network of boardwalks puts you directly over the water, giving you eye-level access to mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and the tangled prop roots of the mangroves below. For birds, the hides scattered around the reserve let you shoot without disturbing subjects; a telephoto lens in the 300-500mm range is ideal for kingfishers, herons, and migratory shorebirds that pass through between September and March. Early morning offers the softest light and the most active wildlife, with mist sometimes sitting over the water for atmospheric shots. Overcast days actually work well here since harsh tropical sun creates difficult contrast in dense vegetation. Wear covered shoes as the paths can be muddy, and move slowly and quietly to avoid flushing birds. (Singapore)
