Taubenlochschlucht

Taubenlochschlucht, or Gorges du Taubenloch, is a narrow limestone gorge cut by the Schüss river between Frinvillier and Biel/Bienne. It runs a little under two kilometres, and you can walk into it straight from the edge of the city of from a parking lot at the edge of Frinvillier. The path was blasted along the rock face in 1889 by the local alpine club, which created tunnels, galleries and footbridges rather than a riverside stroll. Tunnel mouths are the perfect spot to experiment with framing. Plus the wet limestone and moss growing on nearly every surface adds texture and pops of colour to your compositions. High above, the A16 motorway viaduct crosses the gap, and that concrete against the rock is an amazing contrast of nature vs man made stuctures. Overcast days work better than sunny ones, since the slices of sky above the gorge top blows out fast. Ideally make sure there is a a tripod in your kit. It's dark down there, and long exposures will help control the light while also smoothing out the water. There waterfall tucked away in the heart of the gorge but it only runs on a couple of announced days a year, so check before making any plans if waterfall photography is your goal. Access is free and there are not any gates at either end of the gorge. Although the city does close the path periodically because of rockfalls or ice build up.
