The World Begins With Every Kiss

This large-scale mosaic mural covers the facade of the Institut Nacional d'Educació Física de Catalunya and is one of Barcelona's most visually rewarding pieces of public art. Created by photographer Joan Fontcuberta, the piece is composed of thousands of small photographic images that, when viewed from a distance, resolve into a large kissing couple. That dual nature is what makes it so compelling to photograph: shoot wide with a 24-35mm lens to capture the full mural and its surrounding architecture, then move in close with a longer focal length to reveal the individual images within the mosaic. Overcast days work best, reducing glare on the tiled surface and giving you even light across the entire piece. The mural faces outward toward the street, so you have room to step back and frame it properly. Early morning keeps foot traffic low and gives you cleaner compositions. (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain)
