Trois Disques

Trois Disques is a striking bronze sculpture by French artist Alexander Calder, standing at the entrance to Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène. The three interlocking circular forms rise dramatically against the open sky, making it a strong subject for bold, graphic compositions. Shoot from a low angle looking upward to emphasize the scale and geometric shapes against the sky; a wide angle lens works well here to exaggerate the perspective and pull in the surrounding environment. The sculpture's dark patina contrasts cleanly against blue skies or dramatic clouds, and overcast days actually work well by reducing harsh shadows and revealing the surface texture. Golden hour light adds warmth and dimension to the curves. The site is easily accessible by metro on the Yellow Line, and the open plaza around the sculpture gives you room to circle it and experiment with different angles. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
