Vettisfossen is one of Norway's tallest free-falling waterfalls, dropping 275 meters in a single unbroken plunge through a dramatic glacial valley in Utladalen. The scale of the fall against the surrounding cliff face is what makes it so striking photographically, and getting that sense of height into your frame is the main challenge. A wide angle lens works well here to capture both the full drop and the rocky terrain below; positioning yourself slightly to the side rather than head-on lets you show the waterfall in context with the valley walls. Overcast days are ideal since they tame the contrast between bright water and dark rock, though golden hour light catching the mist can be spectacular. The hike in from Øvre Årdal takes roughly an hour each way on a well-marked trail, so plan your timing accordingly and wear sturdy footwear as the path gets wet near the falls.
