Victoria Memorial
Standing at the western end of The Mall, this gleaming white Carrara marble monument serves as both a grand memorial and a natural frame for Buckingham Palace behind it. The memorial's tiered sculpture, topped by a gilded bronze Victory figure, gives you multiple layers to work with, from the allegorical figures at the base to the palace facade rising in the background. Position yourself low and close to the base to exaggerate the monument's scale, or step back toward the Mall to compress the scene and stack the memorial against the palace. The ornate gilded gates on either side make excellent foreground framing elements. Blue hour and early morning work best, when the soft light catches the white marble without harsh shadows and foot traffic is minimal. A wide angle lens handles the full composition well, though a short telephoto helps isolate the upper sculpture detail. (London, England, United Kingdom)
