View of Chantry Island Lighthouse
Chantry Island's, 19 hectares (47 acres), was designated as a Federal Migratory bird sanctuary in 1957 to protect its gull and heron colonies. Today it is home to a variety of bird species such as double-crested cormorant, herring gull, black-crowned night herons, ring-billed gull, great blue herons, seagulls, and great egrets. In the mid-1800s, a majestic Imperial Lighthouse was built as well as the Keeper’s quarters and a boat house. The island is a glacial moraine and consists of stone above the water and beneath extending 1.6km north and south of the island. There are over 50 known shipwrecks scattered off the shores of the island. (Southampton, Ontario, Canada)
