The Custom House is one of Dublin's most striking architectural landmarks, a grand neoclassical building completed in 1791 that sits right on the north bank of the River Liffey. Its long, symmetrical facade, dome, and ornate stone carvings reward careful framing, and the river in front gives you a natural reflective foreground to work with. Cross to the south bank of the Liffey for the classic wide shot that takes in the full building with water in the frame; a wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range works well here. Overcast days soften the light and bring out the detail in the pale stone without harsh shadows. Early morning is ideal when the quays are quiet and you can set up without pedestrian traffic cluttering the scene. The building is also worth shooting at blue hour, when interior and exterior lights balance nicely against the fading sky. (Dublin, Leinster, Ireland)
