Waimea Landing State Recreation Pier
This modest pier on Kauai's southwest shore punches well above its weight as a photography location, combining dark volcanic sand, a weathered wooden structure, and wide ocean views that stretch toward the horizon. Shoot from the beach with the pier as a strong leading line drawing the eye out to sea, or walk to the end of the pier and look back toward the mountains for a compelling reverse angle with the Waimea ridgeline as a backdrop. Sunset is the prime time to be here, when warm light catches the aged timber and reflects off the dark sand in ways you rarely see elsewhere on the island. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full scene, though a short telephoto lets you compress the mountains behind the pier nicely. Parking is straightforward and the area sees relatively little foot traffic, giving you space to work. (Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii, United States)
