Zappeio Hall
Built in the 1880s and set within the National Gardens, the Zappeion is one of Athens' most elegant neoclassical buildings, with its grand colonnaded facade and symmetrical proportions giving you a lot to work with architecturally. Shoot from the formal approach along the tree-lined avenue to use the path as a leading line toward the portico, or position yourself low and wide to emphasize the columns against the sky. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range suits the scale well, though a longer lens lets you isolate individual column details and pediment carvings. Early morning gives you soft, even light on the main facade before crowds arrive, and the golden hour before sunset warms the pale marble beautifully. The surrounding grounds are open and easy to navigate, and the circular rear garden offers a different angle with the rotunda visible through the trees. (Athens, Attica, Greece)
