O Dromeas (The Runner)
This striking 12-meter sculpture, made from thousands of stacked jagged glass plates, sits on a busy median along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and rewards photographers who take time to explore it from multiple angles. Created by Costas Varotsos in 1994, the transparent layered structure catches and refracts light in ways that change dramatically depending on the time of day and your position around it. Shoot from low and angle upward to emphasize the figure's forward lean and sense of motion, or step back and use a longer focal length to compress it against the urban backdrop. Golden hour and backlit conditions are ideal, as sunlight passing through the stacked glass creates a glowing, almost luminous effect. Early morning gives you cleaner compositions with less traffic and pedestrian interference. A 24-70mm lens handles most compositions well, though a wide angle works well up close.
