Allerton Garden
Allerton Garden is a stunning botanical garden on Kauaʻi's south shore where formal landscape design meets lush tropical wilderness along a stream that winds down to Lāwaʻi Bay. The garden rewards photographers who slow down and look for details: the massive Moreton Bay fig tree roots framing bronze mermaid sculptures, tunnels of golden bamboo that create natural leading lines, and dense heliconia and ginger plantings with rich saturated color. Overcast days are often better than bright sun here, as the thick canopy creates harsh dappled light on clear afternoons; soft diffused light brings out the greens and textures without blowing out the highlights. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most situations well, though a macro lens rewards those who dig into the flower gardens. The garden is accessible only by guided tour, so plan your visit in advance and book early, as spots fill quickly. (Koloa, Kauaʻi, Hawaii, United States)
