Old Sugar Mill

Old Sugar Mill - Photo by Joel Bradshaw1 / 1

Tucked just off the main road in Kōloa, this crumbling stone chimney stack and mill ruins sit surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, making for a compelling contrast between industrial decay and natural overgrowth. The rough-cut basalt stonework photographs beautifully in soft light, and you can work several angles here: shoot upward from the base of the chimney to emphasize its height against the sky, pull back to include the surrounding greenery for context, or get close on the textured stonework for abstract detail shots. Overcast days are ideal since the thick canopy and open sky can create harsh shadows in direct sun; golden hour adds warmth to the stone without blowing out the highlights. A wide angle lens works well for environmental shots, while a short telephoto helps isolate details. The site is easy to walk around and free to visit, with roadside parking nearby.
