Arch Rock
Arch Rock is a naturally formed granite arch in Joshua Tree National Park, rising out of the desert floor with enough presence to anchor a strong composition. The arch itself works best when you position yourself low and shoot upward, using the opening to frame the sky, surrounding boulders, or desert vegetation. Sunset is the prime time to visit, when the sun drops behind or near the arch and casts warm orange light across the rough granite surface; arriving 30 minutes early gives you time to find your angle before the light peaks. After dark, the arch makes an excellent foreground for astrophotography, as the park's remote location offers genuinely dark skies and reliable Milky Way opportunities. The trail from White Tank Campground is about a mile and relatively flat, though scrambling close to the arch requires some care. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well here.
