Skull Rock
Skull Rock is one of Joshua Tree National Park's most iconic granite formations, a massive weathered boulder whose eroded hollows resemble a skull's eye sockets, making it instantly recognizable and endlessly photogenic. Get low and shoot upward to emphasize the haunting face-like features against the open sky, or pull back with a wide angle to include the surrounding desert landscape and signature Joshua trees in the frame. Golden hour light, especially in the late afternoon, casts deep shadows into the rock's cavities and brings out the warm orange tones of the granite. Arriving at sunrise can also reward you with softer, more even light and far fewer crowds. The formation sits just off Park Boulevard and is easy to reach on foot; a 16mm to 35mm lens works well for capturing both the detail and the broader desert context.
