Jumbo Rocks
Jumbo Rocks is a sprawling cluster of massive granite boulders rising dramatically from the Mojave Desert floor in Joshua Tree National Park, offering endless compositional possibilities among the rounded, weathered forms. You can boulder-hop your way to elevated vantage points where the rocks stack and overlap with the open desert and distant mountains stretching behind them, or stay low and shoot upward to exaggerate the scale of the formations against the sky. Sunrise and sunset are ideal, when low-angled light carves deep shadows into the textured granite surfaces and the warm tones contrast beautifully with the cool desert palette. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the breadth of the landscape, while a longer focal length lets you compress the boulder clusters with the Joshua trees below. The area sits right off Pinto Basin Road with a designated campground nearby, making it easy to stay for after-dark shooting; the dark skies here produce exceptional Milky Way and star trail images.
