The Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran is one of Rome's most architecturally commanding interiors, and unlike the perpetually crowded Saint Peter's, it rewards photographers with more breathing room and a different kind of grandeur. The nave is defined by massive white pilasters framing gilded niches with dramatic apostle sculptures, creating natural rhythm and depth that rewards a wide-angle lens shot straight down the central aisle. The carved wooden ceiling and polished floor add layers of detail above and below. Arrive early in the morning when side windows cast directional light across the sculptures, giving them strong dimensionality. The apse mosaic is worth isolating with a longer focal length. Outside, the east facade facing Piazza di Porta San Giovanni is best in morning light, while the north facade with its towering statues photographs well in the softer hours before midday. Entry is free, and the interior is large enough to move around without blocking other visitors. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
