Colosseum

Colosseum - Photo by Michael Garcia1 / 1

The Colosseum is one of the most iconic structures ever built, and photographing it well means thinking beyond the obvious front-on shot. The exterior arches create strong repeating patterns that reward a tighter focal length, while a wider lens lets you capture the full elliptical scale from the corners of the surrounding piazza. Early morning is your best window, before the crowds arrive and while the warm low light rakes across the travertine stone, bringing out texture and depth in the ancient facade. The western side catches the best light at golden hour, and a long exposure at dusk can smooth out foot traffic entirely. Shoot from the hill on Via Sacra for an elevated angle looking down, or use the arch of the nearby Meta Sudans area to frame the structure creatively. A 24-70mm lens handles most situations here well. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
