Arco di Tito
Standing at the southeastern entrance to the Roman Forum, this first-century triumphal arch offers some of the most rewarding architectural photography in Rome. The arch frames the Forum beautifully when you position yourself on the Sacred Way and shoot through it toward the Colosseum, or turn around and compress the Forum's columns and temples into a single frame. The carved interior reliefs, depicting the spoils of Jerusalem, reward a longer lens in the 70-200mm range to isolate the detail without distortion. Morning light is ideal, as the sun rises from the east and rakes across the relief carvings to bring out their depth and texture. Visit shortly after opening to avoid crowds on the path beneath the arch. A wide-angle lens works well for full-arch compositions, but step back further than you think you need to avoid perspective distortion at the base. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
