View of Roman Forum

Standing at the overlook on Via Sacra or the Capitoline Hill terrace, you get one of the most layered ancient cityscapes in the world, with columns, arches, and temple ruins receding into the distance toward the Colosseum. The classic wide composition from the Capitoline viewpoint lets you fit the entire valley of ruins into a single frame, and a 24-35mm lens works well here. Early morning is the best time to visit; the soft golden light rakes across the stone columns and creates strong shadows that give the ruins real depth, and the crowds are thin enough that you can shoot without tourists filling the frame. A telephoto lens lets you compress the layers of ruins and isolate specific details like the Arch of Septimius Severus or the Temple of Saturn. Arrive right at opening time for the cleanest shots and bring a polarizing filter to manage the harsh midday glare on white marble. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
