This striking Gothic Revival complex on Chicago's Near North Side is best known for its Chapel of St. James, a breathtaking interior modeled after Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, with soaring stained glass windows that flood the space with jewel-toned light. Inside, shoot from the back of the nave toward the altar to capture the full length of the windows and the ribbed vaulting above; a wide-angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well here. Midday on a sunny day is ideal when light pushes through the colored glass most intensely, though overcast days can also produce even, saturated tones without harsh shadows. Access to the interior requires checking with the Archdiocese of Chicago, as the building now serves as their pastoral center and is not always open to the public. The exterior courtyard and facade also reward careful composition, especially in morning light. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
