Ásbyrgi Canyon is a massive horseshoe-shaped gorge in northern Iceland, with sheer basalt cliffs rising around 100 metres above a flat, forested floor that feels almost impossibly green against the stark surrounding landscape. The contrast between the dense birch woodland below and the dramatic vertical walls above is what makes this place so compelling to photograph. From the canyon rim, wide and ultra-wide lenses work well to capture the full scale of the depression, especially looking inward toward the central island of Eyjan. Descending to the forest floor gives you an entirely different perspective, with towering cliffs framing intimate woodland scenes. Overcast days are ideal here since soft, even light brings out the rich greens and prevents harsh shadows on the cliff faces. The small pond at the base reflects the surrounding walls beautifully in calm conditions. The main parking area makes access straightforward, and a short walk gets you to the best viewpoints.
