Bamboo Forest Waterfall
The Bamboo Forest Waterfall sits along the Pipiwai Trail in East Maui, where a dense canopy of towering bamboo suddenly opens to reveal a series of cascading falls dropping into a rocky stream pool. The bamboo itself is as much a subject as the waterfall, so look for compositions that use the vertical stalks as natural framing before the trail opens up to the falls. Overcast days are ideal here since the forest blocks most direct light anyway, and diffuse conditions prevent harsh contrast between the dark grove and the bright white water. A wide angle lens helps capture the surrounding bamboo alongside the falls, while a slow shutter speed will give you smooth water. The trailhead is a small, easy-to-miss gap along the Hana Highway, and parking is extremely limited with strict no-parking enforcement nearby, so arriving early or parking further down the highway and walking back is often necessary.
