Leleiwi Overlook
Perched at roughly 8,000 feet on the rim of Haleakala, this overlook gives you a dramatic view straight down into the volcanic crater, with the cinder cones, ash fields, and sweeping ridgelines creating natural layers of depth that photograph beautifully. On clear days you can see all the way through the Kaupō Gap to the ocean and across to Maui's north shore, which adds a striking sense of scale. Shoot facing into the crater to capture the otherworldly terrain, or turn around and use the rim's curves as a foreground element leading the eye outward. Mid-morning light tends to bring out the rich reds and purples of the volcanic rock, while clouds rolling through the gap can add dramatic atmosphere at any hour. Bring a wide angle lens to capture the full panorama, dress in layers as temperatures drop quickly, and walk the short paved trail to find the best unobstructed angles along the rim.
