These striking sandstone pillars rise dramatically from the hillside above the Bow River valley, offering one of the most otherworldly landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. The hoodoos themselves make excellent foreground subjects, and you can frame them against the wide valley below with the Fairholme Range stretching across the background. A wider focal length, something in the 16-35mm range, works well for capturing both the pillars and the expansive scenery behind them. The trail runs along the base of the formations, giving you multiple angles and heights to work with. Golden hour light is ideal here, especially in the late afternoon when warm tones rake across the textured rock surfaces and cast long shadows that emphasize the sculpted shapes. The trailhead is accessible from Tunnel Mountain Road and the walk is short and relatively flat, making it easy to arrive early and scout your compositions before the light peaks.
