BFI IMAX

BFI IMAX - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The BFI IMAX is a striking cylindrical glass drum rising from the middle of a busy roundabout just south of Waterloo Bridge, its curved exterior reflecting the surrounding streetlights and passing traffic in a way that rewards patient photographers. The building works best at blue hour and into the night, when the illuminated glass panels glow against a deep sky and car headlights and taillights trace smooth arcs around the structure with a long exposure. Position yourself on the pedestrian pathways that cut through the roundabout to get close, or shoot from the surrounding pavement for a wider context shot that includes the flowing light trails encircling the building. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range suits the tight urban setting well, and a tripod is essential for the slow shutter speeds needed to capture those streaking trails.
