Big Beach

Big Beach - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Big Beach, also known as Makena Beach, is one of Maui's longest and most striking stretches of coastline, with deep golden sand, vivid turquoise water, and powerful shore break that makes for dramatic wave photography. Head to the southern end where weathered lava rocks jut out from the sand, giving you natural foreground interest to frame against crashing surf. A wide angle lens works well here, letting you get low and close to the rocks while capturing the sweep of the beach behind. Morning light is softer and the beach is quieter, but late afternoon sun turns the sand warm and golden with fewer shadows. Stay alert near the waterline since the waves are powerful and can arrive without much warning. Between December and March, scan the bay for Humpback Whales breaching offshore, a telephoto in the 200-400mm range will help you reach them. (Wailea-Makena, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
