Secret Cove Beach

Secret Cove Beach - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Tucked along Maui's southern coastline, this small, sheltered cove earns its reputation as one of the island's most intimate beach settings. A low volcanic rock formation splits the beach into two distinct sections, giving you a natural subject to anchor compositions and create foreground interest. Work from either side of the rocks to frame the divide, or get close to the shoreline and use the gentle wave wash to add motion and reflection. A wide angle lens lets you take in the full sweep of the cove while keeping the rocks prominent in the frame. Sunset is the prime time to visit, when warm light falls directly onto the sand and the rocky outcropping catches golden tones. The beach is accessed via a short path from a small roadside pullout, so arrive early in the afternoon to secure parking before the crowds gather. (Wailea-Makena, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
