Keawala'i Congregational Church
Tucked into a quiet sandy cove on Makena's southern shore, this 1855 lava stone church is one of Maui's most photogenic historic subjects, combining rugged volcanic architecture with a backdrop of swaying palms and sparkling turquoise water. The thick dark walls contrast beautifully against white trim and the blue Pacific, so try wide compositions that include both the structure and the ocean beyond. A slightly elevated angle from the low surrounding hillside helps you layer the church against the water, while shooting from the sandy cove puts the palm trees into the frame as natural framing elements. Morning light is ideal, hitting the ocean-facing side of the building with warm, even tones before the sun gets too harsh. A 24-35mm lens covers most useful compositions here. The church is still an active congregation, so be respectful of services on Sundays and avoid stepping on the surrounding grounds during worship. (Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
